Letter #17 - Week 19: Basically All Pictures I've Ever Sent Home Were Taken or Initiated by Hermana Jensen

January 28, 2019 Hola Everyone! This Tuesday I left Hermana Jesen in a parking lot and navigated the relatively short distance home with my two new companions. It's been interesting seeing how they do missionary work and figuring out how we're going to do missionary work together. They have been enjoying all of the Asian people though, so this transfer should remain as exciting as ever. Several weeks ago a Chinese missionary handed me a stack of their Christmas cards because they didn't want to deal with them. I put one on the refrigerator, but after that I just stuck them in my purse with my pass-along cards and kind of forgot about it. A few weeks back I decided I might as well use them and started showing them as an approach for talking to Chinese people, usually just giving them an English class card after. It's been kind of fun to do that, but this week it didn't work as planned. We were riding down an elevator 10 floors with a Chinese lady,...

Letter #16 - Week 18: My Trainer is so Cool that Sometimes I Accidentally Call Her Mom

January 21, 2019 Hola Everyone! Tomorrow is the fated day that Hermana Jensen leaves me to bigger and better things. We had transfer calls on Saturday, and Hermana is going to be a SISTER TRAINING LEADER IN MANHATTAN. Wow, so cool. She is a testimony to me of how well Heavenly Father knows us and how much he helps us grow as individuals, one by one. Hermana Jensen never ceased to amaze me with her compassion, patience, and love for the people. I know that there is no better person who could have helped me #adjusttomissionarylife Elder Lee, Elder Monk and Elder Sterling are also going to Manhattan and Elder Mensching is going to Staten Island. The rest of us are staying here in Flushing. One of the Korean companionships is closing, but the Elders Kang are going to be in a trio along with none other than me! I'll be living the trio life again with Hermana Walker and Hermana Van Woerkom. Hermana Van Woerkom was my roommate at the MTC!...

Letter #15 - Week 17- The Only Basura Here is You and Vegan Ice

January 14, 2019 Hola Everyone! It's cooled down a lot here in New York, and you can sure tell by the barren streets. We changed to nine o'clock church here this year and when we went to pick people up yesterday morning for church Hermana Jensen noted that 'The only people you see this early on a cold Sunday morning are workers, church-goers, and breakfast-getters (in their pajamas)'. We are currently teaching 7 kids between the ages of 7-13. It has required a lot of energy and creativity, but it is so much fun. Children have lots of the Light of Christ in them, and they want so much to do good and be good. This week we painted prayer rocks with two of the kids and made their own stair steps to baptism. The only thing is that there aren't really a lot of rocks, so we found largish chunks of broken concrete for them to paint. That's New York for you. Unfortunately we can't send pictures of our cute kids, but there's a picture of...

Letter #14- Week 16: Pizza, Pronunciation, and Preaching Repentance

January 7, 2019 Hola Everyone! This week was a wild ride. Much of the work I've done here in New York is with Less Active members. It is so important that each person that we share the gospel with has an understanding of the basic doctrines and principles of the teachings of Jesus Christ. This lack of understanding generally comes from one of two things- having too much information or not enough. As we try to listen to understand each individual and consider their needs, the Holy Ghost will be able to guide us on what is best to do for each person. We've been teaching English classes these past couple of weeks. Lots of Hispanic people are anxious to learn English for their work, so this leads to the need of lots of patience on all sides. You never realize how much the 'th' sound is used in the English language until you're trying to teach someone else to make the noise. They are sincere learners and work hard. There's lots of good food in N...
